One of the great things about vacationing in Sedona, Arizona is that the city is located just a short day trip away from one of the most amazing sites on earth. No trip to Arizona would be complete without a visit to the Grand Canyon and for those guests staying in Sedona, the trip couldn’t be easier.
Geographically speaking, Sedona, AZ lies within Oak Creek canyon. Oak Creek Canyon simply put, is a smaller version of its larger sibling the Grand Canyon to the north. The drive up through Oak Creek Canyon towards the Colorado Plateau has been touted as one of the most scenic drives in the USA. Just one more reason to make the short 2 hr trip. The trip itself can be completed in one day and plenty of options are available to suit the individual traveler.
For those interested in having someone else do the driving, there are numerous coach tours and jeep tours as well as private shuttles available for reservations leaving Sedona each day. Some people prefer the bird’s eye view of Oak Creek Canyon and the Grand Canyon and find a helicopter tour or a scenic flight to be more suitable to their schedule. Driving yourself is always an option. Allow plenty of time to view the scenery along the way and note the limited parking availability at the Grand Canyon National Park entrance.
There are several different viewpoints to take in the Grand Canyon. The most popular entrance is the South Rim which is open daily from 8am – 5pm year round. It is only a short walk to the canyon rim and full services such as restrooms, pay phones, a bookstore, and shuttle bus stops are available. The North Rim is only open from mid May to mid October and requires more planning on the part of the visitor outside of these times. Please consult with the nearest Grand Canyon information center to ensure a safe and pleasant trip.
Whatever time of year you visit and however you choose to see and experience the Grand Canyon will most certainly be memorable. Approximately 5 million people visit this magnificent canyon and they can’t be all wrong.
